Hardwood Shaft and Handle

Both the shaft and the handle of this Gents’ Hardwood Derby Handle Walking Stick are made from hardwood*. The handle has been scorched to highlight the pattern of the grain and the whole cane then varnished with a very high-shine brown varnish.

Hardwoods, as opposed to softwoods, have a more complex structure and are, as the name suggests, generally much harder. Another dominant feature separating the two types of wood is the presence of pores, or vessels, as well as the structure of the cell wall.
