Cherry-Stained Hardwood

Both the shaft and the handle of this Ladies’ Hardwood Derby Handle Walking Stick are made from hardwood*. The hardwood handle has been scorched to highlight the pattern of the grain, while the shaft has been varnished with a very high-shine varnish in a cherry colour.

Hardwoods, as opposed to softwoods, have a more complex structure and are, as the name suggests, generally much harder. Another dominant feature separating the two types of wood is the presence of pores, or vessels, as well as the structure of the cell wall.

Derby Handle

Reputedly the invention of an earlier Lord Derby, who wanted a supportive walking stick that he could also hook over his arm, this style provides excellent support and can be held in either hand. The user’s weight is carried directly over the shaft and the hand is perfectly supported, so it can neither slip forward nor back.
